St. Helena Chapel and Pavilion

Project Description

In recent years, the devoted parishioners of St. Helena Catholic Church embarked on a significant endeavor, acquiring an exact replica of the revered statue of Our Lady of Medjugorje from Bosnia. Recognizing the profound spiritual significance of this statue, our firm was entrusted with the task of designing a versatile sacred space to house it, serving as a focal point to unify the community within the existing campus.

The resulting creation is a harmonious blend of tradition and innovation, where an open-air pavilion seamlessly converges with an enclosed chapel, all interconnected by the timeless craftsmanship of heavy timber mortise and tenon construction. At the heart of this sacred space, the statue of Our Lady of Medjugorje gracefully rests atop a pedestal poised above a tranquil water feature. This subtle element not only adds an aura of serenity but also reflects ethereal light onto the exposed wooden structure, creating a captivating interplay of shadow and radiance.

The interior further embodies a commitment to heritage and sustainability, as reclaimed structural members form the very framework of the chapel. Additionally, the interior finishes boast salvaged slate and bricks sourced from the local region, infusing the space with a tangible connection to its surroundings. Custom stained glass windows thoughtfully admit natural light, enhancing the overall sense of tranquility and reverence that permeates this sacred sanctuary. In its entirety, this project represents a testament to faith, community, and the enduring beauty of sacred design.
