The Jefferson Highway Recreation Center was originally a private swimming and tennis club that had fallen into disrepair through the decades. Since being taken over by BREC, the Park & Recreation Commission for East Baton Rouge Parish, the property has been utilized as a recreational space for multiple activities. The existing 7,800 square foot building originally housed a commercial kitchen, restrooms, and locker rooms, remnant from the building’s previous program.
The arrangement of these spaces made it very difficult for the client to rent the building out for multiple functions, so Hoffpauir Studio was tasked with providing a new layout to better suit BREC’s requirements to serve the community. A new, smaller kitchen was relocated to better serve the main hall, while the existing kitchen and locker rooms were transformed into small meeting rooms. Each of the spaces are now accessed off a new central lobby with a core of restrooms. A new entry gateway and trellis were added to better define the entrance to the event center.
