St. Helena Chapel and Pavilion

DESCRIPTION

In recent years, the parishioners of St. Helena Catholic Church acquired an exact replica of the statue of Our Lady of Medjugorje, Bosnia. The owner tasked our firm with creating a multi-use sacral space to house the statue and create a node to unite the community within the existing campus. The open air pavilion and enclosed chapel are bound by the heavy timber mortise and tenon construction. The sculpture sits on a pedestal over a water feature which reflects light onto the exposed wood construction. Along with the reclaimed structural members, the interior finishes consist of salvaged slate and bricks from within the region. Natural light enters into the chapel through custom stain glass windows which enhances the tranquil space.
